Baker Iron & Metal Co. began operations in Lexington, Kentucky in 1921. The company was initially a partnership between the Baker and the Wides families and later became wholly owned by the Baker family. The company grew to become a leading recycler in Kentucky.
In 1924, the Cohen family began scrap operations in Middletown, Ohio under the name Cohen Brothers Inc. Cohen Brothers grew to become one of the larger scrap metal processing companies in the United States.
Beginning in the 1990s many respected and established family names in the scrap recycling industry began to disappear as several large consolidating entities began to buy up the family owned businesses.
Cohen Brothers Inc., wanting to remain a family owned business (the fourth generation is already well represented on the company roster) elected to expand by buying other well-run, respected scrap metal businesses. "Our customers influenced us to a great extent to remain independent. They wanted to do business with the Cohen family and the Cohen personnel" says Wilbur Cohen, Chairman and CEO of Cohen Brothers.
In 2003, Cohen Brothers of Lexington, Inc. was formed and Cohen Brothers of Lexington, Inc. acquired the assets of Baker Iron and Metal Co.
As part of the Cohen Brothers network of companies, Baker Iron & Metal Co. has the resources to provide the highest level of service and Baker Iron & Metal Co. can compete with anyone on pricing.
The Cohen Brothers network operates businesses in four states and currently
maintains 12 facilities. We are proud to invite you to visit their website at www.cohenbrothersinc.com.
